Church: Word of Hope, North Edsa QC
Preacher: Ptr. Jhun Cunanan
Time: 10:30AM – 12:00PM service
Verse: Luke 5:1-11
As expected, I was blessed once again for attending the Sunday service earlier at the Word of Hope, North Edsa branch. Well let’s be honest, there are really some days that you didn’t feel much of an impact after hearing the sermon, maybe because the words doesn’t suits you or it’s just not appropriate for our current dilemma or situation, but NOT today though.
Today, I was reminded that our God is a God of transformation and a God of promotion! For us to receive his promise of abundant and prosperous life, we have to change the way our life revolves around this earth first, because most of the time, things that people prioritize are completely different to what God wants us to prioritize.
Four Fishermen Called as Disciples
5 So it was, as the multitude pressed about Him to hear the word of God, that He stood by the Lake of Gennesaret, 2 and saw two boats standing by the lake; but the fishermen had gone from them and were washing their nets. 3 Then He got into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little from the land. And He sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat.
4 When He had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, “Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.”
5 But Simon answered and said to Him, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net.”6 And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking. 7 So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. 8 When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!”
9 For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish which they had taken; 10 and so also were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid. From now on you will catch men.” 11 So when they had brought their boats to land, they forsook all and followed Him.
An Encounter with JESUS
1. JESUS is never too busy to meet you.
> Jesus is not only interested in us as a congregation gathered to worship Him, which he delights in, but He is also personally interested in meeting you. However God may reach you, know that God wants to reach you personally. And God will always answer, because He always have time for you.
Note to self: No matter how busy we are, we should always find time to reach out to him. Let’s always ask for His guidance and provision, thank Him for all the blessings that He’s giving us despite of all our sins, and most importantly, let’s ask for His forgiveness as we live in a place that we’re all surrounded by evil.
(I just really hope that You and I can apply this everyday).
2. JESUS wants to take you from shallow faith to deeper faith.
> And how does Jesus take us from where we are right now to where He wants us to be? By pushing us! Jesus pushes us ever gently sometimes with words, sometimes with actions, away from one level of stability, just like the story of Simon in the book of Luke, where in God pushed them to go on the deeper part of the ocean to catch more fish.
> The journey to the deeper water is an opportunity for us to get to know God better. Only the ones who has a deeper relationship with Him can experience the eternal and abundant life that He promised.
Note to self: Going on the deeper part of the ocean is definitely scary, it is more unstable, and at least more unfamiliar, but it is also where there are more fish to catch. Sometimes, Jesus just wants us to step back on our comfort zone and make a dive to a much deeper and unfamiliar place, where we can find more food for our soul and so we can become more dependent on Him. When it get scary, let us be comforted with the thought that God will never let you sink in that boat, because He’s always traveling with you.
3. Turns what you are concerned about into what JESUS is concerned about.
> We are always concern about physical things, but always remember that Jesus is more concern in spiritual things. People tend to put more attention in pleasing others, but tend to forget to do things that pleases God. Also, people tend to value money too much because we thought that it will give us security and stability in life, but it will never will. Money will never be enough for you, because we can only find security in life with our Jesus Christ.
Note to self: All the things here on earth are all just temporary and will never be enough, so we should invest more in our spiritual relationship with our God. This is also the reason why God allow weakness/sickness to over come us sometimes, because sometimes, when people are too happy with their current lives they tend to forget to talk to God and only remembers Him when God starts to shaken-up their lives.
Let us not wait for Jesus to shake our stability for us to remember Him. Don’t wait for God to push you! Step-up and do what God wants you to do!
GOD BLESS YOU!
